Let's Talk Niche

Dear readers,

Let’s talk niche.

Whenever you look at side hustles for writing and how to profit from it, it always tells you to find your niche.

But what is a niche? A niche in business terms is “a specialized segment of the market for a particular kind of product or service.” (Oxford). But how broad is too broad for a niche? How narrow is too narrow for a niche?

I don’t know.

I’m 21 years old. I don’t even know where I want a career, what to eat, what to wear, or who I am. I am in the most indecisive moment, so pinpointing something down to a niche is hard. I change.

Look at my blog post.

I mainly started posting medical/mental health-related stuff. My experience with certain things in the health world. That started as my niche since I’ve been in and out of hospitals my whole life. I’ve seen countless different specialists, been on a multitude of meds, and still struggle with controlling everything. I just wanted to share my experience, and hopefully, someone will find it and won’t feel so alone.

But now. Now I’ve written some that have nothing to do with health, i.e. ‘First Week of Learning ASL,’ ‘First Week of Uni + Moving Out,’ ‘Getting My Creativity Back,’ ‘Creating A Digital Hub,’ and ‘Not Doing Makeup As A Teen.’ Some of these have a slight correlation with my health, like how, in ‘getting my creativity back,’ I struggled with writer’s block because my health was so bad I couldn’t even write. But I don’t want to stick solely to health-related posts. Don’t get me wrong, I feel most of my posts would be about my health, but I want to post about my life.

I’m a young adult trying to navigate through life when I’m dealing with severe chronic migraines, anxiety, and depression. My health is a massive part of my life, and it has affected every aspect of it whether I like it or not, but I do have a life outside of my failing health. I may only be 21, but I want to share experiences.

My lane. My niche is a young adult navigating through life. Is that too broad to be a niche? Probably. Do I care? Nope.

I don’t care, but I want to experiment. I want to see what I enjoy writing the most and what my readers like the most. I don’t want to start off in such a narrow lane that I can’t move anywhere and feel trapped. I would rather start off more general than narrow down.

I’m still learning how to do this blogging thing. I’m still learning about my writing—how I want to write. So, why not experiment while I’m still a beginner?

I know people might say that if I want to succeed and make money, I need a niche. But right now, that’s not my current goal. My current goal is to write. So, I will write what I want and then niche it down later.

Is this still considered a niche? I don’t know.

I still have a bunch of mental/physical health-related posts in the works, but I also have a series coming up about me trying to remake myself. That series is related to health but still a bit separate. I also have a post called My Reading Journey that will come out at some point. There is no correlation; it is just something I enjoy in my life.

I’m sorry if you don’t like it. If you enjoy my health stuff, don’t worry—they will still be coming. If you want to read other things from me—new things—then come along for the journey.

From here on out, it’s an empty, traffic-free road (not a bump-free road), and hopefully, some of you will join me.

Thank you for reading

A.B.💜

The reason for the bow and arrow emojis is that I found this explanation of the bow and arrow and fell in love. One can take any symbol to mean whatever they want, so your meaning of a bow and arrow might differ from mine, and that’s okay. A bow and arrow helps me keep my hope and determination in my future. An arrow can only be shot by pulling it backwards. So when life is dragging you back with difficulties, it will launch you into something extraordinary. Just remember to focus and keep your aim.
